Lost a silencer!

I'm having trouble re-fitting the can to the exhaust .Both parts are standard / OE as far as I can see. The diameter of the can and exhaust pipework seem to be the same? But that can't be right as the silencer which was damaged when it fell off fitted OK-well it did before falling off!
I've searched on here but can't find any relevant previous posts. Can (no pun intended) anyone provide any advice please? Never had any issues like this with my Jap bikes or Moto Guzzis. Is it just my ineptitude or is there something I am missing?
