Personally I've never got on with the leaving the pistons in the barrels system, too many things to fiddle with when reassembling (spring clips falling into crankcase etc.)
I fit the pistons to the rods and then use a home-made ring compressor which is basically a strip of shim steel and a large jubilee clip - this is more compact than most bought items and is a doddle to use in the confined space available.
