The black ones are plastic as far as I know. My '98 M900 had a plastic one which snapped across a thin portion and not surprisingly Ducati replaced these with metal ones of much superior design, somewhere between '98 and 2000.
I think the metal ones are the more common now, as they survive.
Bear in mind that any plastic one that you might find now, will be at least 20 years old and even more brittle.
I would go for a metal one and paint it black if the colour really mattered.
