Good news Nigel. The wood is to try and stop the brackets getting bent if the parcel gets crushed, and to stop them bursting out too.
The way the mesh is welded onto the frame is something special. I think they use a roller electrode? Each wire of the mesh is fused to the frame, then the surplus wire is neatly ground off, or sanded I would imagine.
I can't help admire folks who are good at what they do.
