That's what I heard too, its in the Monster Bible, he cobbled together a bike from whatever bits he could find around the factory, in order to make a bike to commute to work on, 888 frame and engine and a round headlight from an old bevel etc.

Management saw him parking it up one day and liked what he had created and asked him to design a production version for them.
