Adjusting the preload probably won't make the forks feel any softer but will mess up your sag settings. to increase the fork travel and soften them a bit you need to back the compression damping off a bit at a time, but this will ultimately have the effect of making the handling less crisp and possibly make it bounce off line off bumps?
