I believe the single wire neutral light switch works by earthing the neutral light when the bike is not in gear. So, if you remove the wire from the switch and touch it against a bare part of the engine or frame, the light should illuminate. You'll need to detach the wire anyway to clean both the switch end and the connector itself.
