Strictly speaking, kgm is not a unit of torque.
It should really be Nm, ie force x distance, not mass x distance.
Therefore 12.12 x 9.81 (acceleration due to gravity) gives 118.9 Nm.
Conversion factor from Nm to ft.lb is 0.7376.
So 118.9 x 0.7376 gives 87.7 ft.lb.
Of course, in both cases that should really be ft.lbf (ie pounds force, not pounds mass).
Confusing, innit ?
I reckon the victorian physicists did it that way to spread confusion deliberately and keep the hoi polloi in their place.
Like latin in religious services.
